The Book of Marriage

The Prophet said: A woman whose remarriage is imminent may not be married until she herself gives permission. On the other hand, a virgin may not be married until she has been asked for her consent. Some people asked: O Messenger of Allah, what does her consent look like? The Prophet said: By keeping silent!

[Sahih Muslim, Chapter 16]

The hadith of Abdullah ibn Masud Alkama, reported: I went with Abdullah in Mina when we met Uthman. So he went with him and talked to him. Uthman said to Abdullah: (O Abu Abdu-r-Rahman, do you want us to marry you to a virgin? She would bring back some of the days of your youth.) Abdullah said: Concerning the question you raised, the Messenger of Allah said: Young people! Whosoever of you is able to marry, let him do so, for this will help to preserve your looks. But whoever is unable to do so should fast, for it is more of a protection for him.

Anas reported: Some of the Prophet’s companions asked the Prophet’s wives about his acts of worship in his private life. Some of them said: (We will never marry.) Some said: (We will never eat meat.) Others said: (We will never sleep on a bed.) (When the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) heard about this, he uttered praise and said: I admire myself over those who said this and that. But I pray and sleep, fast and break my fast, and marry women. Whoever turns away from this way does not belong to me!

Sad Ibn Abi Waqqas reported: The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) refused that Uthman Ibn Mazun should live in celibacy. If the Prophet had allowed this, we would have been castrated!

‘Abdullah reported: We were with the Messenger of Allah on a campaign and had no wives with us. So we said to the Prophet: (Is it not better for us to be castrated?) He forbade us to do so, but allowed us to marry women for a limited time. In this context he recited: “Believers! Do not deny yourselves the good things that Allah has permitted you! And do not transgress! Allah does not love those who transgress! [Quran 5:87]

Ibn Umar said: The Prophet forbade one of us from going to buy a commodity that his brother intends to buy and one of us from asking for the hand of a woman who is about to be betrothed to his brother.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah forbade trade between a settled man and a nomad and said: “Do not engage in false trade (nagash), and none of you may seek to buy the same goods that his brother intends to buy. Nor may one seek the hand of a woman whose betrothal to his brother is imminent. And the woman must not cause her sister’s divorce in order to be in her place.

Ibn Umar reported: The Messenger of Allah forbade shaheeh. And Shighar is when a man gives his daughter to another man as a wife on the condition that he also gives his daughter to him as a wife, and that the waiver of payment of bridewealth is reciprocal.

Uqba Ibn Amer reported: I heard the Prophet say the following: The conditions that you should give priority to fulfilling are those under which the private parts (of women through marriage) have become permissible for you.

Abu Huraira reported: The Prophet said: A woman whose remarriage is imminent may not be married off until she gives her consent. On the other hand, a virgin may not be married until she has been asked for her consent. Some people asked: O Messenger of Allah, what does her consent look like? The Prophet said: By keeping silent!

Aisha reported: I asked the Messenger of Allah whether or not the virgins who want to marry off their families may allow it themselves. The Messenger of Allah said to her: (Yes! She must allow it herself.) Aisha said: (I then told him that the virgin is shameful after all.) The Messenger of Allah then said: (That is her consent, that she remains silent!)

Aisha said: The Messenger of Allah (saws) married me when I was six years old and did not have marital relations with me until I was nine years old. We went to Medina and there I had a fever for a month, and my hair grew until it reached the lobe of my ear.

Umm Roman came to me while I was on a swing with my playmates. She called me loudly. So I went to her and I didn’t know what she wanted from me. She grabbed my hand and left me standing on the doorway. I said: Ha, ha. As if my breath had stopped.

She led me into a house where some women from the Ansar were gathered. They gave me their blessings and wished me all the best and happiness. She left me in the hands of these women. They washed my head and adorned me. Nothing frightened me except that the Messenger of Allah came in the morning and that I was entrusted to him.

Sahl Ibn Sad reported: A woman came to the Messenger of Allah and said: I have come to you to give myself as a gift to you. The Messenger of Allah raised his eyes to her, looked at her for a while, then lowered his head to the ground. When the woman saw that he did not make a decision about her offer, she sat down. Then a man stood up from his companions and said: O Messenger of Allah, if you have no plans for her, then give her to me as a wife!

The Prophet asked him: Do you have anything (as a bridal gift)? He said: No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah. The Prophet said to him: Then go to your family and see if you find anything! The man went, came back and said: No, by Allah! I have found nothing. The Prophet said to him: Go look for a ring, even if it is made of iron! The man went, then came back and said: No, by Allah! I have found nothing, not even a ring of iron. But here is my loincloth, half of which she can own.

Sahl replied: But the man had no outer garment for it, and the Messenger of Allah said to him: What should she do with your loincloth? If you wear it, she will have nothing on your body. The man sat down and after a long time he stood up. When the Messenger of Allah saw that he was leaving, he called for him and when he came back, he said to him: What do you know of the Qur’an by heart? The man said: I know Surah so-and-so and Surah so-and-so by heart. He then told him several surahs. Then the Prophet said: Can you recite them by heart? The man said: Yes! Then the Prophet said to him: You can go then! We have given her to you as a wife for what you can memorize from the Qur’an.

Anas Ibn Malik reported: The Prophet saw that Abdu-r-Rahman Ibn Auf had yellow marks on his body. When he asked him why, he said: I married a woman and gave her as much of the gold as the wipe of a date seed. The Prophet said to him: May Allah bless you for this. Give a feast, at least with a sheep!

Anas, reported: I saw the wedding feast of Zainab in which he served bread and meat to the people. He used to send to me to invite the people. When he had finished, he got up and I followed him. But there remained at home after the banquet two men who were engaged in conversation. Then he visited the houses of his wives and greeted them with the words: As-Salamu Alaikum, how are you, O members of the household? They replied: O Messenger of Allah, we are well. How do you find your relatives? He replied: Good.

When he had finished, he returned home and I was with him. When he reached the door, he found that the two men were still engaged in conversation. But when they saw him return, they went out. By Allah, I did not know whether I or a revelation told him that the two men were going out, so he returned and I was with him. When he reached the threshold, he dropped the curtain between him and me. Allah, the Exalted, then revealed the Qur’anic verse: Believers! Do not enter the houses of the Prophet without being given permission to eat. [Quran 33:53]

But he is impotent! The Messenger of Allah smiled and said: You want to go back to Refaa? No, that is not possible until you consummate your marriage with Abdu-r-Rahman! She said this when Abu Bakr was with the Messenger of Allah and Khalid was waiting at the door for permission to enter. So he called out: O Abu Bakr, do you not hear what this woman is saying to the Messenger of Allah!

Abu Said Al-Khudriy reported: We went with the Messenger of Allah on the campaign of Banu Al-Mustaliq and captured some noble Arab women. Since the state of celibacy was long, we wanted to have sexual intercourse with them and practice azl. But we said: Why do we do this without asking the Messenger of Allah? So we asked the Messenger of Allah. He replied: It is not necessary for you to do this. There is no living being until the Last Day that will not be brought into existence.

Jabir reported: We practiced Al-Azl at the time when the Qur’an was revealed.
